NQ Academy Webinar #6: From Large-Scale Tectonics to Field-Scale Geothermal System: Lessons Learned from Sumatra
Thursday, February 25, 2021
Sumatra is an island that has a large geothermal potential. With geothermal potential spread in 101 locations, Sumatra has geothermal energy resources of 9679 MW, about 40% of the total geothemal reserves in Indonesia. Currently, on Sumatra, there are geothermal powerplants (PLTP) with total capacity of 744.4 MW, thus there is still a large potential for geothermal energy development that can be utilized.
The geothermal potential on the island of Sumatra has a unique system because it is related to the existence of the Sumatran Fault System (SFS). The existence of geothermal manifestations is very associate with this fault. With the large potential and the characteristics of the geothermal prospects, it is necessary to have an understanding of the geological settings to increase the success rate in the geothermal exploration and exploitation stages.
Through NQ Academy Webinar series 6 entitled “From Large-Scale Tectonics to Field-Scale Geothermal System: Lessons Learned from Sumatra”, we want to discuss about geothermal system over Sumatra Island.
What is the influence of the Sumatran Fault System (SFS) to its adjacent geothermal system? Does it increase the prospectivity by providing additional permeability, or counterintuitively somehow increase the subsurface risks? How could regional geologic phenomenon (with hundreds of km2 spatial resolution and hundreds of million years time frame) influence locally-occured geothermal systems (with merely several km2 size and hundreds of thousand year livespan)? How significant is the tectonic framework (regional geologic setting) for geothermal characterization and assessment?.
NQ Academy Webinar #6 will be delivered by Dr. (cand) Lukman Sutrisno. He is a Ph.D. Candidate in Tectonics & Geothermal, Joint Supervision PhD Program between Utrecht University (Netherland) and Universitas Indonesia. The Webinar will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021.
We invite you to participate in the 6th NQ Academy Webinar. So, Don’t miss it!
