WKP Gunung Sirung in Paradise Island

Monday, January 11, 2021 WKP Gunung Sirung was established established in 2016, located in Pantar Island, Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province with resources potency of 152 MW. 1st Geothermal Power Plant with capacity 5 MW is targeted to operate in 2025. Of the total area of WKP (14,500 Ha), there are around 6,500 Ha of forest area, mostly protection forest. Early survey and assessment of WKP Gunung Sirung is conducted by Geological Agency before 2015 and continued by PLN in 2017 through NewQuest Geotechnology in Preparation of Exploration Program and Development Plan Proposal project covering the following scopes: Conducting…

Prospect of WKP Bora Pulu

Wednesday October 21, 2020 WKP Bora Pulu was determined in 2012, located in Sigi Regency and Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province consisting of 2 potential locations: Bora with a potential of 90 MW and Pulu 30 MW. Geothermal in the WKP Bora Pulu is targeted to operate in 2025, with first development plan of 40 MW. There are approximately 35,000 Ha of forest area (Conservation Forest, Protection Forest and Production Forest) in this WKP covering totally 79,750 Ha. The WKP Bora Pulu has quite complete of surface exploration survey data because many parties have noticed it. Initial data and studies…

Review of NQ Academy Webinar #4: Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems

Wednesday October 21, 2020 NQ Academy Webinar #4 was held on December 19, 2020. This webinar entitled “Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems” which was delivered by Dr. Zainal Abidin, and hosted by Dr. Yunus Daud. The webinar is well conducted with number of participant is about 200 persons. The webinar has discussed clearly how to define whether a geothermal area is associated with volcanism or not based on geochemical data analysis. In his beginning presentation. Dr. Zainal Abidin divides magmatic levels into several categories, namely critical, non-critical or non-magmatic. It must be observed carefully and using the right methodology.…

NQ Academy Webinar #4: Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems

Wednesday, December 16, 2020 Indonesia is located on the Ring of Fire extending from the islands of Sumatera, Java, Nusa Tenggara and towards Maluku as well as North Sulawesi. Therefore, Indonesia is blessed with many geothermal potentials associated with volcanism. From 351 geothermal areas in Indonesia, there are 215 areas are associated with volcanic geothermal systems or about 61% of the total geothermal areas in Indonesia. Some geothermal areas associated with volcanism are identified as hydrothermal systems, but some others are volcanic hydrothermal systems and quasi-volcanic hydrothermal systems, which still have traces of magmatic fluid. Such geothermal systems often made…

PLTP Rantau Dedap: Next Geothermal Power Plant in Sumatera

Monday December 14, 2020 There are 6 production WKPs on the island of Sumatra with a total capacity of 744 MW or the equivalent of 35% of the national PLTP capacity. After WKP Sibayak, Ulu Belu, Sarulla, Lumut Balai, Sorik Marapi, Muara Laboh, then in June 2021, it is WKP Rantau Dedap’s turn to become the 7th Production WKP on Sumatra Island. The COD schedule has been delayed quite far from the end of 2020 due to Covid-19 constraints. Sumatra’s geothermal potential is 9,679 MW, equivalent to 40% of the national potential. There are 6 more WKPs that will produce…

Review of NQ Academy Webinar #3: The Three Million Dollars Well

Wednesday October 21, 2020 Geothermal drilling cost contribute about 35% of the Total Cost of Geothermal Power Plant Project. A study conducted by Directorate of Geothermal, General Directorate of New and Renewable Energy and Conservation Energy (EBTKE), based on data 2018 and 2019, resulting drilling costs are in the range of $ 3M – $ 12M per well with an average drilling cost of $ 2,500-3,800/m. The 3rd NQ Academy Webinar entitled The Three Million Dollars Well: A Lesson Learned from Geothermal Drilling in Indonesia, shared a low drilling project cost, presented by Ashadi, M.T., Drilling Manager of KS Orka…

NewQuest Geotechnology & North Tech Drilling Signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement

Wednesday October 21, 2020 Icelandic geothermal development specialist North Tech Energy (NTE), through its daughter company PT North Tech Drilling (NTD), has signed a partnership agreement with PT NewQuest Geotechnology (NQ). The companies will join forces in developing geothermal concessions and together they will develop energy storage and bring carbon capture solutions to the market whereas the companies aim to capture CO2 from emitting industries in Indonesia. NTD and NQ will be focusing on developing mini geothermal power plant in areas where electricity demand is low but very much needed. Using mini geothermal drilling solutions means immense reduction of environmental…

NQ Academy Webinar #3: The Three Million Dollar Well

Wednesday October 21, 2020 After the Master Plan of National Energy (RUEN) in 2017 set a target installed capacity for Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) 7.2 GW in 2025, various efforts were made by the government to achieve this goal including drilling by government in 20 Geothermal Working Areas (WKP) 2020-2024. This target becomes dynamic, following developments and obstacles faced such as regulatory constraints to the impact of Covid-19, the latest targets are 7.7 GW in 2030 and 9.3 GW in 2035. In his remarks at the 10th MUNAS API/INAGA (Indonesia Geothermal Association) yesterday, 18/11 2020, Prijandaru Effendi, who was re-elected…

NQ Exploration Survey in Malaysia and Prospects for Geothermal Development in ASEAN

Wednesday October 21, 2020 Among early activities of NewQuest Geotechnology was geothermal survey in Malaysia. In 2009, Dr. Yunus Daud founder of NewQuest Geotechnology and the team through PT Makara Mas UI together with USAINS Malaysia conducted MT-TDEM survey in the Tawau Geothermal Area (Sabah) for the JMG (Minerals Geoscience Agency). Furthermore, the Reconnaissance Survey in Peninsular-Malaysia in 2010, as personal consultant for TNB-Research (Tenaga Nasional Berhad). There were many geothermal prospect locations studied (at least 13 prospect areas) and come up with 3 most prospect areas: Ulu Slim & Sungai Kelah in Perak, Lojing in Kelantan. ASEAN through Indonesia…
